Security and level of fitness required

  • As the terrain is steep some of the walks are strenuous (Monte Pico for example) specially when it is raining. All participants must be in very good shape.
  • It is strongly recommended to take an insurance for medical repatriation.

Wet season :

mid-september to mid-december

Dry season :

mid-december to mid-march
july to mid-september

The island contains an extraordinary variety of landscapes from 0 to 2.000 meters abovr sea level) and has a high annual rainfall (varying from 700 in the north, to 7.000 mm in the south)

Temperature : ±26°C on the coast, but much cooler at altitude (sometimes 15°C). Humidity relatively high (> 80%).

Health

  • Vaccination against yellow fever is compulsory
  • Anti-malarial treatment is essential.
  • Check polio, tetanus and B.C.G.
  • Meningitis (A+C), Hepatitis (A+B) and Typhoid are recommended.

Formalities, language and currency

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months) and visa (50 US$ in 2000) that you can get on arrival at the airport.
  • Official language : Portuguese, but French is often understood and spoken
  • Local currency is the dobra. (in september 1998, 1 FF = 1160 dobras). Because of constant variations in the rate of exchange, it is recommended that visitors bring foreign currency (US$). Credit cards are little used, and are not accepted by the banks, and only by some hotels.

Flights and local time

  • Local time is GMT
  • The São Tomé e Principe archipelago is volcanic in origin. It lies 300 km off the coast of Gabon, on the equator. Sao Tomé, its capital city, is served by TAP from Lisbon, Portugal (6h flight), by Air Gabon from Libreville in Gabon (1h flight). Air São Tomé flies to Libreville.
